Boiler Replacement

Boiler Replacement in Kent — When to Replace, What It Costs, and What to Choose

Making the Right Decision at the Right Time

Honest Advice on Replace vs Repair

Replacing a boiler is a significant decision. Done at the right time, with the right boiler for your home, it can reduce your heating bills, eliminate the frustration of an unreliable system, and give you the reassurance of a 10-year manufacturer warranty. Done prematurely — or with the wrong boiler, or by an engineer without the relevant training — it is an expensive mistake.

BoilerSense is a dedicated boiler specialist. We install boilers every week across Kent and South East London. Our engineers do not sell installations by default — we give homeowners an honest assessment of whether their existing boiler is worth repairing or should be replaced.

When replacement is the right decision, we help you choose the right boiler for your home and budget, and install it properly the first time.

Signs Your Boiler Needs Replacing

Most boilers do not fail overnight. They deteriorate gradually, showing warning signs that indicate a system nearing the end of its useful life.

Over 12–15 Years Old

The average lifespan of a modern condensing boiler is 10–15 years with annual servicing. If your boiler is in this age range and experiencing problems, repair costs are likely to escalate and replacement economics become compelling.

Frequent Breakdowns

If your boiler has required repair more than once in the past two or three years, the pattern is likely to continue. Older boilers accumulate wear across multiple components simultaneously — fixing one fault reveals the next.

Rising Energy Bills

Modern A-rated condensing boilers operate at over 90% efficiency. Older G-rated boilers may be operating at 60–70% efficiency. If your energy bills are higher than expected, boiler efficiency is a likely contributor.

Yellow or Orange Flame

A healthy gas boiler burns with a crisp blue flame. A yellow or orange flame indicates incomplete combustion — a condition that produces carbon monoxide as a byproduct. This is a safety concern requiring immediate attention.

Banging, Kettling, Unusual Noises

Loud banging, rumbling, or kettling sounds indicate limescale or sludge accumulation on the heat exchanger. While a power flush can address early-stage cases, a severely fouled heat exchanger may make replacement more sensible.

Spare Parts No Longer Available

Manufacturers discontinue support for older boiler models. If your boiler requires a part that is no longer available, repair is no longer an option. Our engineers will advise on parts availability before recommending replacement.

Repair vs Replace — A Practical Framework

We will always give you an honest comparison — the cost of the repair versus the cost of a new boiler and the likely savings in running costs.

The 50% Rule

A common industry benchmark: if the cost of a repair exceeds 50% of the cost of a new equivalent boiler, replacement is usually the better financial decision. For a new combi boiler costing £2,700 fitted, a repair costing more than £1,350 tips the calculation towards replacement — particularly if the boiler is old or has had previous repairs.

Consider Future Fuel Cost Savings

An A-rated replacement boiler in a Gravesend or Dartford semi-detached home can reduce annual gas spend by £200–£350 compared to an old G-rated boiler. Over 10 years, that is £2,000–£3,500 in savings — a material factor in the total cost calculation. We will help you run this calculation honestly.

Age and service history matter

A 7-year-old boiler with a clear annual service history and its first fault is almost always worth repairing. A 13-year-old boiler with no service history and multiple past faults is almost always worth replacing. Most cases sit between these extremes — which is why an honest engineer's assessment is important. Call 01474 632 158 for a free assessment.

Baxi & Ideal — Value Without Compromise

What Happens on Replacement Day

A like-for-like combi boiler replacement is typically completed in a single day. Here is what to expect.

Engineers Arrive

Our engineers arrive at the agreed time with your new boiler and all materials required for the installation.

Old Boiler Removed

Your old boiler is isolated from gas, water, and electrics and carefully removed from the wall. Dustsheets protect your floors throughout.

New Boiler Fitted

The new boiler is wall-mounted, with all pipe connections made, condensate routed, and flue installed or connected to existing.

System Flushed

The system is flushed and inhibitor dosed to protect the new boiler against sludge and corrosion from day one.

Commissioned

The engineer starts the boiler, checks combustion, sets gas pressure, and verifies all controls are functioning correctly.

Handover & Paperwork

We show you how to use your boiler and thermostat, confirm your warranty is registered, and issue your Gas Safe certificate, Building Regulations notification, and service record — all on the day.

Frequently Asked Questions — Boiler Replacement

Most like-for-like combi replacements are completed in a single day. System conversions or complex installations may take two days. We will confirm the expected duration during your free survey.
A modern condensing boiler, serviced annually, should last 10–15 years. Premium brands with good service histories regularly exceed this. The warranty period — up to 12 years for qualifying Worcester Bosch installations — gives a good indication of the expected reliable life.
Replacing an old G-rated boiler (60–70% efficiency) with a new A-rated condensing boiler (90%+ efficiency) will reduce the amount of gas needed to heat your home. For a typical Kent semi-detached property, savings of £200–£350 per year are realistic. Over a 10-year lifespan, that represents a meaningful contribution towards the cost of the installation.
If your existing heating system has sludge or corrosion build-up, a power flush before installation is strongly recommended. Installing a new boiler onto a contaminated system can damage the new boiler quickly and will void the manufacturer warranty. Our engineer will assess the system during the survey and advise whether a power flush is needed.
A like-for-like replacement means fitting a new boiler of the same type (combi, system, or regular) in the same location, connecting to the existing pipework and flue where possible. This is the fastest and lowest-cost option. A conversion — for example, replacing a regular boiler with a combi and removing the cylinder and tanks — involves more work and higher cost but may be worthwhile depending on your circumstances.
Yes. If your boiler has failed completely and you need a replacement urgently, call 01474 632 158 and we will advise on availability. In many cases we can arrange a next-day installation for like-for-like replacements if the boiler is in stock.
